Know Your Rights 🗳️

As the elections approach, we wanted to highlight a few key things to help us prepare and exercise our rights as a community. Education around these issues help us stay informed and armed against misinformation. Remember that voter suppression can come from confusing messages about the rules, so let’s do our best to stay informed of deadlines, processes and resources through government sources. Your county and city websites will have the latest and most accurate information.

For example, in Oregon, a felony conviction doesn't permanently end voting rights and voting by mail is allowed. Also, staying informed of the candidates on the ballot and their proposed plans is very helpful for ensuring that elected leaders create policies that directly benefit our community. Lastly, some amazing organizations are providing community voter education including around ranked choice voting. They include Imagine Black, The Rosewood Initiative, The Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization, and The African Community Development Center.

In this issue, we would like to highlight the Coalition of Black Men. The Coalition works to empower the Black community through advocacy, education, and community programming. It was formed in 1988 by eight Black men who wanted to address youth gang violence in their community and challenge media-driven negative stereotypes while utilizing positive reinforcement. Their members are from a range of professions and life experiences, and they work together to foster bonds among Black men, serve the needs of Black youth and improve quality of life in the Black community.

Their programs encompass youth mentoring, health and wellness, education, and economic development through events like the Blood Drive, Bike and Bite and Soul Stroll.

The Coalition partners with many Black-serving organizations, including Black Educational Achievement Movement (BEAM), Black United Fund of Oregon, Black Men’s Wellness and Soul District Business Association to expand their impact.
