Support Black-owned Businesses 🛍️
National Black Business Month was established in 2004 to celebrate and uplift Black-owned businesses and entrepreneurs across the United States. Black entrepreneurs often face many barriers like limited access to the market, funding rollbacks, and narrow succession planning, which is why many thriving Black-owned businesses don't make it past the first generation. But together, we can change that!
Buying Black this month (and all year long) is one of the most powerful ways to support your community and fuel economic growth and there are so many ways to show up. You can switch recurring purchases like coffee and skincare to Black-owned brands. If you're looking to invest, seek out companies that support Black founders. Planning an event? Hire Black vendors for entertainment, catering, and cleaning. If you're gifting, Black businesses in our directory offer printing and gifting services! And on the XB app, supporting a Black-owned business is as simple as leaving a review. Keep reading to learn more.
Organization Spotlight 🧳
We're excited to spotlight an organization that's been supporting businesses and strengthening our community for decades. Soul District Business Association (SDBA) was founded in 1977 with a mission to invest in the Soul of Portland and is one of the oldest business districts. They're dedicated to helping small businesses and entrepreneurs grow both professionally and economically by building their skills, increasing their visibility, and connecting them to resources.
At the heart of their work are community-centered economic strategies that foster equitable growth, uplift local entrepreneurs, and sustain the district's cultural and economic vitality. SDBA offers a range of programs to help entrepreneurs start and sustain their businesses, including free consultation, lending connections, funding application support, legal services, and business development support.
Supporting Soul District Business Association is a great way to empower Black entrepreneurs and support the economic prosperity of our community.
