Earth Week 🌍

Updated: Aug 31

Hey friends 👋🏾

We want to start by centering Earth Week, happening now. If you haven’t done this recently, we highly recommend you stop, look around and appreciate how beautiful our planet is. On our planet, every single thing is important and connected. From bees and birds to mountains and streams, to the animals at the bottom of the ocean that we will probably never know of. And because they are all important and connected, we know that we also matter and have a lot to give.

So, this week let’s use our power to speak up, protect our environment, be more resourceful and reduce waste. Every single action counts.

In this edition, we’ll talk about Black-led organizations working on sustainable agriculture and food systems. Stay tuned.

Black-led Sustainability in Portland

Black-led organizations in Portland are advancing sustainability through a regenerative lens, focusing not just on environmental protection, but on land restoration, building community systems, and economic power. Feed’em Freedom Foundation builds circular food economies that keep resources within Black communities and develops shared infrastructure, including distribution, storage, and plant starts. Black Oregon Land Trust uses a community land trust model to secure land access, and Black Futures Farm practices agroecological farming with and for the community. In addition, these organizations offer workshops and other training opportunities to farmers, food entrepreneurs, and the community and increase self-sufficiency. They teach practical farm skills and provide exposure to advanced systems with an emphasis on cultural knowledge exchange. In this way, we are learning, connecting with community, and increasing resilience.

In the same spirit, we’d like to shoutout Cultivated Roots, Black Food Sovereignty Coalition, Mudbone Grown, and Black Food Fund; thank you!

What do you think?

What regenerative tradition or method do you practice?

This can be something you started or got from someone else.

Feed’em Freedom Foundation (FFF) is a food justice and agricultural organization with a mission to build community-owned, regenerative food systems that advance food sovereignty, economic empowerment, and environmental sustainability for Black communities. They are creating a full farm-to-community ecosystem, the Black Community Food Hub. It will operate as a home base for their cultural foods collaborative -  a collective of organizations that support emerging Black farmers, youth, and food-insecure families in our community through apprenticeship programs, youth education, culturally-relevant food pantries, and food box deliveries. Feed’em Freedom Foundation’s work is giving back control of food systems to Black communities by supporting Black farmers, creating jobs, advancing regenerative and circular agricultural practices, improving access to healthy food and strengthening our cultural connection.

Feed’em Freedom Foundation is building a regenerative, Black-led food system by combining agriculture, infrastructure, and community power to create a sustainable and self-determined future. Support their work by volunteering, donating, or attending a workshop and telling your friends about it!
