Black Portland Writers

As the weather gets cooler it’s becoming the perfect time for a good book or two. Just picture reading a book at the kitchen table or your favorite spot in the house over coffee. So, in advance we are highlighting a few Black Portland writers you might be interested in reading. These writers artfully depict the Black experience in their fiction and nonfiction works, and do so for all ages.
Mitch Jackson, Pulitzer Prize winning author of The Residue Years, Survival Math, and Fly: The Big Book of Basketball Fashion writes about the intersection or race and poverty. New York Times, TIME and John Newbery award winning children’s author, poet and educator, Renée Watson writes about Black girls finding their power, communities rebuilding after loss, and the quiet dignity of being seen. Young readers can start with All the Blues in the Sky. Professor of Black Studies at Portland State University, Walidah Imarisha, is a poet and author of Angels with Dirty Faces: Three Stories of Crime, Prison and Redemption. She co-founded AWOL, the political hip hop magazine and has also toured the country many times performing, lecturing and challenging. And Shari Dunn, author of Qualified, which uncovers the history of Competency Checking, the hidden hand assessing the qualifications of Black and other people of color in the workplace. She is also an accomplished attorney, news anchor, CEO, professor, and game-show winner.
Let’s keep in mind that as we support these writers, it’s also important to provide our youth with learning opportunities and create exploration spaces to increase representation in literary arts.
